The “Wanpaku Sumo” Competition is an annual Sumo sports event for elementary-school-aged children held by Junior Chambers all over the country, including Shinjuku, starting with local competitions, with the winners going to Regional and finally to the National Championship, held at the real Kokugikan sumo hall.
It’s an unique opportunity for children to engage in heated Sumo battles, as well as parents and volunteer staff to be part of a community and national event with a long tradition. Many famous Sumo figher’s careers actually started at Wanpaku Sumo.
The competition’s goals are to provide an opportunity for children to grow both physically and mentally through the sports of Sumo, by providing an oportunity to find the courage to go into a fight, have compassion for others with whom you fight, and value manners and courtesy by practicing this tradition-rich sport. The winners will be participating in the Tokyo Championship and onward to the National Championship.
42 years ago, JCI Tokyo started Wampaku Sumo as a way to provide children in Toky an opportunity to play and participate in sports. Today, the competition has expanded to all over the nation, as part of our activities to “create a bright and prosperous society.
